Innovating Marine Education: The Marine Hybrid Simulator for Local College Students

At Akiva Ltd, we’re passionate about delivering tailored solutions that empower the next generation of innovators. Our latest project, the Marine Hybrid Simulator, is a bespoke training system designed College Students. This innovative simulator is set to revolutionize how students learn about power generation, energy storage, management, and consumption measurement in real-world scenarios.

Why Build a Simulator?

The college focus on "future technologies" for the marine industry, both commercial and leisure, presented a unique challenge. The system needed to be portable to comply with landlord restrictions and to accommodate potential future relocations. It also had to be robust and flexible enough to simulate the complexities of modern hybridized electrical systems found aboard vessels.

The result? A modular, interactive system that mirrors real-world marine setups, built entirely with Victron Energy equipment—a testament to reliability and performance in the marine sector.

Key Features and Modules

1. Power Center Module

The Power Center is the heart of the simulator, showcasing energy storage and conversion technologies. This module features:

  • Victron Energy Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries offering 10.24kWh at 24V.
  • A Victron Energy 24V 5000W inverter to power AC loads.
  • A Victron Energy solar charge controller and alternator interface for renewable and engine-based charging.
  • Victron Energy Remote control and monitoring capabilities for advanced energy management.

This module provides a comprehensive view of how power is generated, stored, and utilized on a modern marine vessel.

2. Alternator Module

To replicate onboard DC charging, this module replaces a diesel engine with a 3-phase electric motor, driven by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) connected to a standard 230V power source. Students can observe how alternators charge batteries in real time, fostering an understanding of energy conversion and efficiency in hybrid systems.

3. Generator Module

This module demonstrates how DC generators can efficiently recharge batteries. Key features include:

  • A 4.8kW DC generator with optimized fossil fuel use.
  • Portability through a trailer-mounted design.
  • Systems for cooling, fuel, and exhaust that mimic real-world generator setups.

Students gain insights into when and how generators are used to support hybrid systems, emphasizing sustainable energy practices.

4. Solar Module

This portable setup includes a pair of 210W solar panels mounted on an adjustable "A" frame. Students can experiment with panel angles and sun positions, learning how solar energy integrates into hybrid systems and contributes to clean energy goals.

5. AC Load Module

Designed in collaboration with the college’s electrical contractor, this module ensures seamless integration of AC loads into the simulator. It provides a practical way to study how power flows and is consumed in a marine environment.

Hands-On Learning Opportunities

Beyond the equipment, the Marine Hybrid Simulator offers comprehensive training sessions:

  • Initial training at handover to familiarize instructors and students with the system.
  • Tailored sessions for students and employer demonstrations, fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

This hands-on approach ensures students are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of future marine technologies.

Transforming Marine Education

The Marine Hybrid Simulator is more than just a teaching tool—it’s a bridge to the future of the marine industry. By replicating real-world systems, it provides students with invaluable skills and knowledge, preparing them for careers in energy management, hybrid systems, and sustainable marine technologies.

At Akiva Ltd, we’re proud to support local colleges in there mission to drive innovation and excellence in education. The Marine Hybrid Simulator represents our commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that inspire and educate.
